TV Size: How Big is Too Big or too Small?

The Calculation:

1.5 – 2.5 x the diagonal of the Television = Optimal Viewing Distance

The best viewing distance of the Display size you choose, should matchup with your optimal viewing area i.e. a couch or love seat ect.

Here are some examples of Optimal Viewing distances for these display distances where the lower measurement indicates the TV would be large in the space and the bigger measurement indicates the TV would look smaller:

55″

82 1/2″ – 137.5″

65″

97 1/2″ – 162 1/2″

75″

112 1/2″  – 187 1/2″

Where to put all that awesome gear?

Centralized or Local?

Does it all go in a central rack tucked away somewhere and the audio and video is distributed out from there?

Does each room get the equipment local to the TV?

Maybe a hybrid with the video equipment local and the audio equipment centralized?

There are differing philosophies at play and some people will only do it one way. Since we have both been having lots of discussions with clients about this very topic lately, we thought it would be great to share what we have learned.

The Case for Centralization

Everything goes into the rack and the rooms are very clean and modern with just a TV on the wall and speakers in the walls and/or the ceilings. Every video system is built around the control system. Even if there are only one or two TVs in the home, the video equipment goes in the rack and control system distributes it throughout the home. Let’s look at why this is a great loves this solution:

  • Aesthetics: Everything is neat and clean, which our clients demand.
  • Service and Support: It is easier to service when everything is in a well-dressed rack.
  • Less Tampering: It is less likely that the a person will go into the rack and risk knocking wires loose or IR emitters off of the equipment.
  • Fewer Devices: You do not need a cable box and AppleTV/Roku for each room, just one for each member of the family. And you do not need a smart power supply and network switch in each room either. Fewer devices usually mean fewer things that can go wrong.

With the reliability, quality, and flexibility of control systems, this is a great solution for us, especially when there are a lot of TVs and just a few sources, or vice-versa.

Keeping It Local

There is a growing contingent of home tech pros who are whole-heartedly ditching the rack and putting everything local at the TV location. The network gear often goes in a closet somewhere, but everything else is distributed throughout the home. This, too, has many benefits.

  • Video Distribution: All you need is a coax and 2-3 Cat6 to each room. There are no concerns about EDID, video resolutions, handshakes, etc., since everything is connected directly to the TV with a relatively short HDMI cable.
  • No Issues with Game Consoles: With a centralized system, game consoles require another transmitter in the room to send the video and audio back to the rack, since the controllers can usually not reach back to a central location. With a local setup, the console is already in the room.
  • Less Intimidating: Clients are often scared of a rack. They do not feel comfortable doing anything inside of it, even something as simple as rebooting a cable box. While our clients have self-service tools like OvrC Home and can call us, many people like to feel the level of control and self-sufficiency to be able to open the cabinet door and reboot a device.

The Hybrid Approach

The best of both worlds. We will often have the network gear and whole-home AV equipment in a rack, but have cable boxes and streaming devices local at the TV. This is a great solution because:

  • The setup is clean and simple. Often the hardware fits behind the TV and a two-port smart power supply provides all of the troubleshooting needed.
  • All the benefits of a local system in terms of control system, intimidation factor, and simplification of video.
  • The larger, bulkier components are out of the way and housed in a small rack.

Where homes are large, there are lots of TVs, and there is plenty of space for a rack, this could be a great choice. When houses are between two and four rooms and there is limited closet space, a local or small rack system makes sense – the systems are typically just too small and the cost does not justify the benefit of a matrixed video system.

Everyone loves watching a great movie on a big screen with a great speaker system.

A Good Design Solves A Problem. A Bad Design Will Create One.

But few would not complain about the sticky floors, uncomfortable seats, and kids on their bright smartphones.

Our team spends thousands of hours each year to find the best looking and sounding home theater equipment.

Whether you have a dedicated theater room planned or are thinking of upgrading your weeknight living room movie night, we have recommendations covering whatever space and budget you have.

We understand that it’s not totally clear how everything fits together.

This step by step guide starts off by prioritizing AV needs- Read on

You’d be surprised at how little it can cost to upgrade your at home watching system from functional to enjoyable. There’s so much value in a minor upgrade.

Anything is better than TV speakers.

For less than $1,000, consider a soundbar + subwoofer. It will offer a huge step up in quality for most existing setups and leave enough money in the budget for media streamers and a universal remote.

The same cost-prohibited mindset goes for the perceived high cost of a high-performance dedicated theater or even multi-purpose family room.

1

Start with Video

Since video is typically the center of the room, we need to choose between a TV or Projector. How large can you go? How big is too big so it doesn't throw off the design of the room? Don't worry, there's a calculation for that below!
2

Audio - AV Receiver

Now it's time to choose the receiver that's right for you. Budget matters here. Surround sound typically looks like 5.1 where the "5" are the speakers and the ".1" represents the subwoofer. You might see 7.2 which would mean the surround sound receiver is capable of producing surround sound to 7 speakers and 2 subwoofers. Many receivers also let you partition 2 channels of the receiver to create a second zone like a patio for example.
3

Audio - Choose the look

In-ceiling, In-Wall, Bookshelf, Reference, Invisibles or a mixture?
4

Audio - Performance

Ask yourself about the content you hear most often: Movies, Sports, Music, Video Games. Then dial in the best type of speaker: Silk, Kevlar, Metal or horn tweeters. Different materials produce different sounds.
5

Network and Wifi

Everything talks to each other on a network now a days. Who wouldn't want better and faster speeds? Something to always consider when you're redoing your theater room and electronics.
6

Control

Perhaps the most forgotten aspect of any AV System. If you have more than 3 remotes or 3 apps that control your systems, consider a universal a remote.
7

Sound Absorption

Last but never least, echos, yuck! Hard surfaces affect audio. Carpets, Drapes and pictures are most common but consider stylistic acoustic paneling or base traps to combat echos.
8

Calibrate it!

Dive deep in to the audio settings in the audio receiver and in the menus of the TV to ensure you're getting the best performance, everything is in sync and it matches your room conditions.

How Big is Too Big for a TV?

TV Size Calculator – Example is for a 75″ TV

The calculation is:

1.5 – 2.5 x the diagonal of the Television.

In this case, if the wall  has room for a 75″ the appropriate viewing distance (couch) would be 9-15 feet.

How Much does a Home Network Cost?

Home Network Costs and Quality

Question: What equipment is need for a network?

This includes all of the equipment needed to attain fast and consistent speeds. This equipment includes a Modem, a Router, and Wifi. In some applications, adding a network switch is necessary. The switch is basically an extension of the router and is used when all the ports of the router are taken by other devices like computers, printers, hardwired wireless access points, home automation equipment ect.

Question: Hardwire or Wireless?

In all cases, it is best to hardwire any component that has the ability. The hardwired network takes first priority on the network and provides for the best speed.

Question: Does the type of wire matter?

AbsolutelyMost homes and business are wired with Cat5e. Here’s a breakdown of the cabling and the speed capability associated each respective cable:

Cat5e

Speed in Mbps Max 100

Cat6

Speed in Gbps Max 1,000

Cat6a

Speed in Gbps Max 10,000

Cat8

Speed in Gbps Max 40,000

Question: What does a new network cost?

Some factors: The level of quality, speed and coverage dictate price which can range anywhere from about $300 for a simple system (modem and wireless router) to cover 1,200sqf to $3,000+ for a larger home.

Question: Common Mistakes

Be on the lookout for something too good to be true. For example, ISPs like Century Links and Cox will stand behind their All-in-One Modem, Router, Wifi combo units. These have a purpose. Their main customer rents on average a 1,000 sqf home or apartment. These units are not capable of the range and network speeds most consumers require.

Another thing to look out for are Wireless bridges or Wireless Extenders. These devices repeat the signal from the main router to places where the wifi signal is low. These can cause devices headaches as they don’t’ know which point to connect to and users might have handoff issues while moving throughout the home or business.  If you are using one of these, DO NOT PUT IT WHERE THE WIFI IS LOW. Instead, put it in the middle of the main router and the problem router.

The best systems will divide the equipment: Modem, Router, Switch and Wireless Access Point(s). With a couple access points, the home is on 1 network and the signal is fast everywhere plus they can be upgraded easier and more can be added to the system in a snap.

Which system is right for you?
